Relative Pronoun – Le Pronom relatif

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

To enable students to use relative pronouns effectively by the end of this lesson. 

What is Le Pronom Relatif? 

Relative pronouns connect a dependent clause to a main clause, providing more information about a noun without starting a new sentence. They are essential for complex sentence construction.

Usage Example
Qui Subject of the verb in relative clause L’homme qui parle est mon professeur. (The man who is speaking is my teacher.)
Que Object of the verb in relative clause Le livre que tu lis est intéressant. (The book that you are reading is interesting.)
Où  Refers to a place  La maison où j’habite est grande. (The house where I live is big.)
Dont Replaces de+noun Le film dont je parle est célèbre. (The movie about which I am talking is famous.)

EXERCISE: 

  1. Le livre _______ est intéressant. (The book that is interesting.)
  2. L’homme _______ parle est mon professeur. (The man who is speaking is my teacher.)
  3. La maison _______ j’habite est grande. (The house where I live is big.)
  4. Le film _______ je parle est célèbre. (The movie that I am talking about is famous.)
  5. J’aime la ville _______ j’ai grandi. (I love the city I grew up in.)
  6. Le professeur _______ enseigne le français est très gentil. (The teacher that teaches French is very kind.)
  7. Le restaurant _______ nous allons manger est excellent. (The restaurant we are going to eat at is excellent.)
  8. Avez-vous lu le livre _______ je vous ai prêté ? (Have you read the book I lent you?)

Réécrivez les phrases suivantes en utilisant une proposition relative. (Rewrite the following sentences using a relative clause.)

  • Le professeur est très gentil. Il enseigne le français. (The teacher is very kind. He teaches French.) -> Le professeur _______ enseigne le français est très gentil. (The teacher who teaches French is very kind.)
  • Le livre est intéressant. Je l’ai lu la semaine dernière. (The book is interesting. I read it last week.) -> Le livre _______ j’ai lu la semaine dernière est intéressant. (The book that I read last week is interesting.)
